The DIY Car Buyer's Manual.

The complete framework for buying your next car without paying anyone to do it for you. Budgeting, shortlisting, inspecting, negotiating, closing — the same process I use for matchmaking clients, written down, organised, and handed to you. The Negotiation Playbook is folded in as a full chapter; the PPI Checklist stays its own product because it's a working field tool, not reading material.

Inside the Manual

Eight chapters,
start to keys, then back to sale.

Written as a working manual, not a book. Each chapter ends with a checklist or worksheet you actually use, not a "summary" you skip.

01

Setting your real budget

Total cost of ownership in plain numbers. The trap of monthly-payment thinking. Why "I can afford $X" usually means you can afford $X minus 25%. Includes a worksheet that mirrors the TCO calculator , plus the conversations to have with your partner before you start.

02

Defining what you actually want

The matchmaking questionnaire as a self-administered exercise. Lifestyle, drive mix, what the car needs to feel like, what it can't do. Most buyers skip this and end up with a car that's wrong in ways they couldn't articulate beforehand.

03

Building your own shortlist

Where to look (and where not to). How to decode AutoTrader, BaT, Cars & Bids, Hagerty, and Kijiji listings. Reading auction comps. Trim and option boxes that matter. CPO programs decoded — when manufacturer certification is worth the premium, and when it isn't. The shortlist methodology I use, applied to your search.

04

Inspecting & test-driving

The methodology behind a real pre-purchase inspection: the 30-second walkaround, the test-drive script, what to ask the seller, red flags versus yellow flags, and how to read a mechanical PPI report. For the field checklist itself, the standalone 142-point PPI Checklist is what to bring to the viewing.

05

Negotiation

The full Negotiation Playbook, also normally $19 standalone, integrated as Chapter 5. The four questions that change the conversation. The one that closes it. Dealer-side tactics decoded. Private-seller scripts.

Includes the $19 Negotiation Playbook
06

Closing & paperwork

The contract review checklist. Financing terms to question. How the F&I office actually works (and counter-scripts to handle it). Worked math on extended warranty and GAP — the only two products where the answer is genuinely "it depends." Trade-in math. HST and luxury-tax handling. Lease vs finance vs cash.

07

Delivery & the first 90 days

The delivery walkaround that catches dealer-side shortcuts. Insurance shopping methodology. The three-year maintenance schedule. Building a maintenance binder that adds $2k to your eventual sale price. Modifications: which kill resale, which don't.

08

Selling well

The sell-side framework. When to sell (depreciation curve sweet spot). Where (Carvana / dealer / private / Cars and Bids / BaT / brokers, with the math). How to prep, how to list, how to price, how to negotiate as the seller. Plus three appendices: worked scenarios, a glossary, and a provincial quick-reference card.

Matchmaking

If your time is worth more, or the car is involved enough that you don't want to be the only set of eyes on it, the matchmaking service is the answer. I run the process; you sign at the end.

Who this is for,
and who it isn't.

It's a $49 Manual, but it's still real money. I'd rather you skip it than buy it and find it wasn't your fit.

This is for you if you're —

  • About to spend $20,000+ on a car and want to do it without dealer-side help being the only voice in your ear.
  • Comfortable with the search and the negotiation, but want to make sure you're not missing anything systematic.
  • Have time on your side. The process is patient; the Manual rewards patience.
  • Buying your first or second enthusiast car and want a single document that walks you through the whole thing, not five different YouTube series.
  • Cost-sensitive enough that the matchmaking service is out of reach but you still want the same framework.

This is not for you if you're —

  • Buying a $5,000 commuter. The Manual's depth is overkill; a free Carfax-reading guide will do.
  • In a rush. If you need a car this week, the framework can't compress to that timeline; either widen your timeline or book a Concierge engagement.
  • Looking for car-specific advice (which model, which generation). For that, the model-specific Deep Dives ($25) are a better fit.
  • Not actually willing to do the work. The Manual is the framework, but it's still you running the process.
Common questions

The questions I get
before people buy.

Is this just the PPI Checklist + Negotiation Playbook stitched together?

No. Those are two of the seven chapters and they're integrated, not bolted on. The other five chapters — budgeting, defining want, shortlisting, closing, and the first 90 days — are content you can't get standalone anywhere on the site. The Manual is roughly 60% new material.

Should I buy this or the matchmaking service?

If your hourly rate is over ~$50 and you don't enjoy the process, matchmaking pays back fast — the dealer-side savings on a $40k car typically exceed the engagement fee. If you have time, you enjoy researching cars, and you want to learn the framework so you can apply it to the next car too, the Manual is the better fit. Many buyers do the Manual once and then upgrade to matchmaking on a more expensive car later.

Does this work outside Canada?

Mostly. The framework is universal, the negotiation chapter is universal, and the inspection chapter is universal. The chapter on closing and paperwork is Canada-leaning (HST, luxury tax, trade-in tax handling, RIV for imports), but the underlying principles transfer. US and UK buyers have used earlier versions of the framework with a few tweaks I note in-text.

What if I already bought the PPI Checklist or Negotiation Playbook?

Email me with your order number and I'll discount the Manual by what you've already paid. Worst case, you pay $11 to upgrade.

How long does it actually take to use this?

Reading the Manual cover-to-cover takes 4–6 hours. Actually applying it to a real car-buying process takes 15–40 hours over 4–8 weeks, depending on how rare the car is and how patient you are. That's the right timeline; rushing past it is what produces the buys you regret.

Is there a refund policy?

7 days, unconditional. Email david@carsmenskii.com with "refund" in the subject. Same-business-day processing. I'd rather lose $49 than have you feel cheated.

Will you keep updating it?

Yes. The auto market changes fast — interest-rate environments, the luxury tax rules, dealer-side tactics, the platforms where listings live. Anyone who buys the Manual gets every future revision free, indefinitely.
